Why do “mail order brides” do it?

I have just clicked on a link for “Thai brides” and been checking out the profiles. Sure, there must be gold diggers and visa chasers, but a lot of the women have degrees and professional jobs in their home country. (Not to mention being young and attractive). Why would they want to take a chance on a guy they don’t know, and move to a foreign country that probably seems grey and miserable? The future husband could turn out to be abusive or worse.

Something of a gamble, but America, England, Germany, Aussies, etc offer a chance at a MUCH better life than the rest of the world can even dream of.

In some lesser cultures women are second class citizens subject to legally sanctioned discrimination and abuse.
